Oxford Academy is ranked #1 in California High Schools and #11 in National Rankings because students that attend this school have a competitive advantage in learning, academics, and college preparation.
To attend, students must take the Oxford Academy entrance exam that is offered every year to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. After that, entrance doors to this school are CLOSED. Oxford only offers a few spaces every year and competition is fierce.
We have prepared hundreds of students for the Oxford test in the past 17 years and our acceptance rate has always been 80%. So when it comes to getting your kid into Oxford, we know how. Here’s what we focus on in our program:
1. HAVE YOUR CHILD TAKE THE TEST IN 6TH GRADE
The Oxford Academy Entrance Exam is offered every year to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. After that, entrance doors to this school are closed. Your best bet is to have your child take the test in 6th grade, because that is the ONLY time Oxford accepts an entire class of students of about 200 total. After that, spots only become available if currently enrolled students drop out of Oxford in 8th or 9th grade - which means there may be anywhere from zero to just a few spots available.
Plus, students entering Oxford for Jr. High (7th-8th grade), perform better in high school because they would’ve already developed the right work ethic.
We’ve helped students already in 7th-8th grade pass the exam too, but it’ll be easier to test in 6th grade.
2. PREPARE YOUR CHILD FOR ADVANCED-LEVEL QUESTIONS ON CORE SUBJECTS
The Oxford Academy Entrance Exam tests math, reading, and writing, but it takes a lot of preparation to pass because they don’t just test at the grade-level. The test asks questions that are a grade above as well, and that means students have to solve problems about concepts that they might have never learned in school yet.
That’s why our teachers help students focus on the specific lessons at and above grade-level that have appeared on the test throughout the years.
3. TEACH YOUR CHILD HOW TO WRITE A STRUCTURED, THOUGHTFUL ESSAY
Sad to say, but most students do not learn to write a complete essay with concrete details and the right balance of facts and opinions until 9th grade. Yet, the Oxford exam asks students to complete such an essay starting from the 6th grade because the ability to write is an important factor in deciding admissions to this school.
The best way to prepare for this part of the exam is to first of all, learn how to think about, plan, and respond to complex topics, and of course, learn how to write complete, structured essays. Both take a lot of practice, but practicing with the right topics and having an essay structure to follow helps students excel in this part of the test.
Throughout the years we’ve collected all the past writing topics the Oxford exam has asked, and we have our students practice responding to these exact topic assignments. We also use the same essay grading system as the Oxford Academy English teachers to make sure our students can write at the “A” level.
4. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, AND PRACTICE MORE
A good structure is teaching new lessons and taking practice tests every week. With the right, structured practice, your child will be able to take the Oxford Exam with confidence.
